I am a specialist in resource management and environmental law, having worked in these and other areas of litigation since 1990. I was a partner in the firm of Wynn Williams, and head of that firm’s resource management and local government team from 1998 to 2013, prior to joining Saunders & Co in 2023.

My areas of expertise include:

  • urban development strategies and plans
  • regional and district plans and zoning changes
  • air quality plans and consents for discharging contaminants to air
  • surface water and groundwater quality plans and consents for discharging contaminants to water
  • resource consents for taking and discharging irrigation water, and damming water
  • resource consents for marine farming
  • resource consents for landfills
  • prosecutions for environmental offences
  • heritage issues, including preservation of the character of the Arts Centre
  • use of scientific modelling in relation to air quality, surface and groundwater quality, transport flows, and airport noise contours
  • judicial review
  • local government policy and review

As I also have a degree in natural resources engineering, I am ideally equipped to deal with the complex technical evidence which most environmental cases involve.

Examples of my recent work include:

  • Obtaining rezoning of rural land to enable an Industrial and Business Park.
  • Obtaining rezoning of rural land to enable residential development.
  • Resource consent work for an existing quarry to be developed into a landfill.
  • Making submissions to Councils to enable residential development within Airport Noise Contours.
  • Resource consent work to enable expansion of a sawmilling operation.
  • Resource consent work to enable industrial development in a rural zone.
  • Advising and representing people who have been prosecuted for environmental offences.
  • Resource consent work to enable a Solar Farm.

I enjoy the forward-looking nature of environmental law, where we work collaboratively to design our best future.

In my spare time, I stay fit by practising yoga, gardening, and going to the beach.
