Incorporated Societies - Act now before it’s too late
Incorporated societies have less than two months to take action to ensure they continue operating legally under the new Incorporated Societies Act 2022 (2022 Act). Societies (such as your sports club, community organisation, or residents’ association) that were registered under the Incorporated Societies Act 1908 must re-register with the Registrar of Incorporated Societies by 5 April 2026.
If a society does not re-register by this deadline, it will automatically cease to exist, losing its separate legal identity and the protections that incorporation provides, including limited liability for members.
Re-registration involves several important steps: reviewing and updating your society’s constitution to comply with the 2022 Act, obtaining formal approval from members, and submitting the completed application to the Registrar. Societies that delay risk missing the deadline and facing legal and operational consequences.
If your society has not yet started or completed reregistration, we strongly advise immediate action. Ensuring your society is properly re-registered guarantees that it can continue to operate effectively and legally.
